Fantastic Friends and Where to Find Them

Life hack: spending too much time away from the office? Feel like your girlfriend is too much girl and not enough friend? Singledom is only one difficult conversation away!

Mary and I had an amicable parting of ways a couple weeks ago, the full details of which will be recorded elsewhere. Suffice it to say that this weekend away came at just the right time for me.

This was a sight for sore eyes, straight out of a Hallmark movie.

Arrived too late to take part, but there were some lovely – though architecturally questionable – pieces on display.
Cousin Palooza!

Aunt Andi got everyone to go for a walk around the loop while I hung back to take care of some work items.
Morgan sound asleep at noon.

Hayden and I drove north to Logan, to see our respective people. Hayden dropped me at my friends’ apartment and then headed off for his own dinner plans.

This kitten had only just come home earlier that day. They tried to get me to adopt his litter-mate, but I sadly had to decline.

These friends of mine were old roommates of Mary’s, so I was extremely grateful to still count them as my friends. We shot the breeze, then went shopping for dessert items before firing up Crazy Rich Asians. Took an intermission to head to a ward activity where there was free pizza, availed ourselves of said pizza, then absconded with our full stomachs and headed back to the apartment to finish the film. Hayden showed up at that time and joined us for the rest.

Annabel has the most adorable tarantula you’ll ever see. Kali, goddess of death. How cute.

Hayden and I then made the long drive down to Provo where I dropped him off, then headed north to my own accommodations in Alpine.

Kid having fun with someone’s earpiece.
A poor man’s version of Joker’s Wild. Someone’ll have to build a proper board for this.
Assume the position.

The next day I joined Hayden and Mattie on campus. Had Cup Bop for lunch with Hayden in his fancy shmancy new engineering building, attended CS class with Mattie (way more fun than I’d thought it’d be), and caught up with a few folks in the Talmage building.

Cool rover is cool.
Yup, my Portal 2 poster is still alive and well in the lab. They’re still using my twine doorstop hack as well, “better than anything else we’ve tried.”
Mmmboy.

I had to find a room to take a conference call for work, and figured I could easily find a nook somewhere on campus. Unfortunately I didn’t realize it was finals prep week and every single study room was reserved. Tried all my old haunts, but no joy. Even tried sweet-talking the CS front office folks into lending me the conference room that I’d hoped wasn’t being used, but that didn’t work out. Ended up ensconcing myself in an old projector room that no one ever used.

The work meeting ran late so I wasn’t able to catch the train north with Hayden and Mattie. Traveled up solo, then met everyone else at Abravanel hall for the concert.

Good show once again.

Steve sporting a new hair style.

I didn’t manage to get any good pictures but my Logan friends came down for the concert. Had to head back up half-way through unfortunately due to scheduling issues. One of them stuck around, however, as she’d be spending the night in Alpine before heading to the airport with me in the morning.

Scout being an absolute pill, getting into the stocking stuffers while we were out.

On the drive home I replayed the steps it took me to get in the car and had the horrifying realization that my backpack with my work laptop did not feature in the sequence of events. I’d left it in the Abravanel Hall lobby. And my flight was early the next morning. We got ahold of the officer on duty there and he said not to worry, the bag was safe in his office and I could pick it up any time that evening. Well, sort of worry, since if I didn’t get it in time they’d have to send it to a secure warehouse for processing since it contained valuable electronics.

We did the math and figured it’d be best to swing by their office on the way to the airport the next morning.

A pre-Christmas miracle.

Caught the flight, made it back, all was well in the world.

The next day we had a team offsite activity to burn through some fun budget before it went away in the new year. Japanese steakhouse followed by in-door archery, which was far more fun than I’d anticipated.

The next day was a presentation to a visiting VP. We’d spent an inordinate amount of time on that slide deck, and I’m quite proud of how it turned out, but I’m so happy not to have to deal with it anymore.

Now that’s a lawn decoration.

Just counting the days down till I’m once again back in Alpine! See ya soon!

Home Again

So I finished up my work trip.

Love the sense of humor.
Good food trucks.

Had creme brulee for dessert on the night I got back, before finishing up Avatar: The Last Airbender with Mary.

I got to use the torch to cook the sugar on these.

Spent most of one day in the office before heading home for the Thanksgiving break.

Busy prepping for the outdoor Christmas party.
Boy was it packed.
This scene made me do a double-take. I was thinking, “What are they segregating the drinking fountains for?”

Had a lovely Thanksgiving dinner at Aunt Lisa’s.

Then some other cousins dropped by that evening.

A view of Meadowbrook Drive late at night.

The next evening was Cousin Movie Night! Went to see The Green Book, which was real fun.

Get-together at our place right afterwards.

I solicited people to come with me to the ice rink for Broom Hockey but ended up going it alone. Had a blast, until my back went out :/ Ah well, another couple weeks as an infirm person.

The next evening was the BYU vs Utah game. What a first half. And what a second half. For different reasons.

At least this was fun to watch.

The next day I found myself wanting to go to the YSA ward but without a car to drive, so I walked myself there, passing some nice sights on the way.

That evening was a get-together at Andi’s place just before Xan’s Eagle Court of Honor.

Mmmboy.
Xan’s out-door forge.

Xan had this on display but let me keep it afterwards. It was supposed to be a leaf or something, but now it can be a spoon or whatever.

After that we had a family movie night where we watched the new Christopher Robin movie. Fun times.

The look of determination.

The next day I worked from home before heading to the airport. Sad day.

Spotted this at work after coming back.
This fun little doodad was on display for the day.

Thursday was an impromptu bowling night with some friends.

The fellow in the middle was crashing at my place while he was in town for a couple weeks, before heading on down to Hawaii. He’s the guy I went to Hawaii with earlier this year. May go chill with him next year too.

Friday was a White Elephant gift exchange ward activity.

If you zoom in, from left to right we have canned vegetables as headphones, bread as loafers, and an exercise block that helps you feel good about yourself.
My contribution to the party, picked up from another Googler. I regret spending it on this party though, it would’ve been more fun at a different one. Ah well.

On Sunday evening I had a get-together slash going-away party for my buddy who’d be in Hawaii the next day.

Didn’t end up decorating these, but they tasted good anyways.
Happened to have a pretty fun load-out on this Dominion round. Wish I would’ve zoomed closer in to the cards so I could recreate the game for later.

And now I’m just counting down the days till I can hang at home again and check out the awesome choir performance! See ya then.

Bye Bye Kittens, Hello Smoky Sunnyvale

Well it was time to see those two troublemakers off. Sad day.

Confession: I caught him in there but didn’t have my camera on me, so this was after I put him back for the photo op.
They seemed to barely remember her at first, but they warmed up later.

With three pairs of hands it took far less time to transport them back home than it did to cat-nap them in the first place. I’m gonna miss snapping pics of them.

That week at work was Accessibility Week, where we focused on how to make our products more usable by people with disabilities or or who are in other ways different from the ones who design the products. My friend who works at Google – and actually owns the cats pictured above – arranged for Kacey McCallister, who’s been featured in these posts before, to pay us a visit at Google.

On Friday I had a group of friends come together at my place for a barbecue, whom I hadn’t hung out with in a good long while. It was great to bring the old band back together.

Spent the weekend cleaning up after the cats.

Mmmboy

On Saturday afternoon Mary and I went to her folks’ place to clean up in her garden and help rake / leaf blow their yard.

The residue from after the carrots were cleaned off. Thought it was pretty.
This was the fun half of gardening.
Didn’t grab a ‘before’ pic, but we did a bang-up job back there.

That evening we went out to see a performance of Rise Up, a tribute band that performs the music of Hamilton. It was amazing. I’m just annoyed now that I didn’t plunk down the change to see the real show when it was on tour in Seattle. May have to go intercept them at one of their other shows next year.

On early Monday morning I boarded a flight for Sunnyvale. A colleague I work closely with down there is leaving the company, so I decided to spend some time down there hoovering up as much knowledge as I could and helping on-board his replacements.

Pretty smoke stacks.

Cause why not have data center racks all up in a storage unit out on display?
Little fella made his presence at the out-door lunch tables very well known.
Playing with dangerous forces here.
What a wonderful wall hanging.
One of the few out-door shots I managed to get that my camera wasn’t able to make look significantly better than reality. It’s been incredibly smoky all week. Many people wear masks when out and about.

I’ll be giving a presentation on my work at a generic developers luncheon on Monday. Pretty excited about it. I’d planned on putting in some time now and then throughout the week on my slide deck. Unfortunately some things blew up and I never got the chance. So I spent a good chunk of Friday evening and Saturday till 2:30pm working on it. Finally left my hotel at 3 to get some food before I passed out. Hardly any cars on the road, with the smoke in the air it felt a bit eerie. Found a nice teriyaki place and ordered a whole mess of lunch.

I’d been hearing all about these “Bird” electric scooters taking over the Bay Area like Lime bikes are taking over Seattle. Peeked out the window and saw a few laying around, figured I’d give it a whirl. Packed up my bag and headed towards what Google Maps indicated was a nice grassy area with walking trails. Figured I could relax on some grass and read a book or something.

Ehh, not so much.

Looks like a post-apocalyptic wasteland.
A rose garden tried its darndest to exude pleasantness amidst the atmosphere of doom and gloom.

I flipped the scooter right around and headed back to the teriyaki place. Figured it’d be healthier to stay indoors on a day like that. Plopped back down in a booth and got back to work on the presentation. Finally finished it up at around 8:30pm. Of course “finished” is a relative term, I’ll probably nit-pick at it right up till noon tomorrow.

Given that it was about to become the Sabbath, I figured I should go grocery shopping. Found a Whole Foods open till 10pm, and figured I’d dart in and grab something frozen I could reheat later. But good golly did they have an amazing selection of stuff.

All stocked up for the rest of my stay.

Today I attended my old Stanford YSA ward, the one I went to five years ago when I was interning with Apple. I walked in the door at 1:15pm, fifteen minutes till Sacrament Meeting started. And it seemed that I’d missed out on a YSA luncheon that everyone was clearing away. I didn’t realize until that moment just how isolated I’d been this entire week. I was very annoyed that I’d elected to eat lunch by myself in my hotel room when I could’ve come here.

Sitting in the foyer for a few minutes before church began was cathartic. Just hearing all the conversations going by, who’s majoring in what, weekend plans, etcetera, it all felt like oxygen to me. I’m reminded of the idea that everyone needs a Third Place. There’s home, and there’s work, and there needs to be somewhere else. For some it’s bars or clubs; we have church.

By the end of Sacrament Meeting I’d fallen in love with the ward all over again. One of the speakers gave a profound talk focused on the philosophy of suffering, citing – among other more scriptural sources – the Terryl Givens book The God Who Weeps. The Sunday School teachers were motivating and articulate. I overheard someone before Elder’s Quorum enthusiastically describing his side-project of building a way for people to easily order customized lego figurines. Fun times. Didn’t end up recognizing anyone from the old days, though I did meet up with someone I used to home teach back at BYU, so that was fun to run into her.

I’d packed a change of clothes as my original plan was to change after church and go exploring, but I decided to stick around and enjoy the last few stragglers chatting around. Then decided that it was a fine time to get this installment going.

Eventually got kicked out of the building, when it was getting locked up, but I drove on over to a neighboring stake center where a free dinner was being put on just before a fireside by a pair of authors who put together a book on early Saints in California.

Guess I won’t be needing that stockpile in my fridge after all…

Sat with some YSAs; it was one of those tables where not many people knew each other, so a good amount of “Hi, I’m       , what’s your name? Oh nice, well what do you do?” going around. Haven’t done that in a while, so that was a nice change of pace.

And now I’ll wrap this up before they get started with the actual fireside. Less than a week before I’m back home!
